Cuckoo heard both on Wirral Way (Thurstaston) and Stapledon Woods. First of Spring?? If so they are very late!

7 Red-throated Diver, 300 Common Tern, 15 Sandwich Tern, 8 Golden Plover and 1 Tree Pipitl - Hilbre Island.

Dawn Chorus Day:

Royden Park (report by David Small).
Dawn chorus noisy, mostly blackbirds, robins, song thrush, occasional mistle thrush and tawny owl and fox! However we saw and heard, especially between Royden Park and Irby quarry, chiffchaff, willow warbler, blackcap, whitethroat and lesser whitethroat. A local heron flew by mobbed by carrion crow, and at Irby Quarry a female sparrowhawk shot past. I' m fairly certain that redpolls flew over twice (I've since checked my Birds of Britain audiotape to be sure). Several jays seen and heard as well as drumming greater spotted.

Stapledon Wood (report by Richard Smith)
Wood Warbler plus usual woodland birds such as Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Song thrush and especially Wren! Also Willow Warbler, Green Woodpecker, Yellow Hammer and Bullfinch on Caldy Hill. No sign of the Pied Flycatcher.

May 5

1 Wood Warbler - Stapledon Wood, and a Pied Flycatcher heard singing in nearby Caldy Woods.
15 Whimbrel, 40 Sanderling, 2 Grasshopper Warbler, 3-4 Sedge Warbler, 1 Whitethroat and 1 Peregrine Falcon - Hoylake shore.
4 Whimbrel, 1 Little ringed Plover and 1 Lesser Whitethroat - Point of Ayr.
6 Siskin, 2 Redpoll, 8 Great-crested Grebe, 8 Whimbrel, 50 Common Tern, 100 Sandwich Tern and 40 Little Tern - Hilbre Island.

April 30

1 Whinchat and 10 Grasshopper Warbler -Gronant.
1 Corncrake and 3 Whinchat - Talacre sand dunes.
1 Osprey - Hoylake shore, heading towards Formby point, also a Pied Flycatcher (male), 50 Gannet and 175+ Swallow.
2500 Dunlin, 10 Whimbrel, 30 Sandwich Tern, 30 Sand Martin, 16 Wheatear and 1 Grasshopper Warbler - Hilbre Island.

April 26

16 Common Scoter, 1 Arctic skua, 1500 Knot, 20 Kittiwake, 100+ Sandwich Tern, 6 Razorbill, 1 Whinchat, 3 Grasshopper Warbler (2 ringed), 1 Redstart (female), 6 Whimbrel and a slow but steady passage of Gannets - Hilbre Island, also 1000+ Oystercatcher roosting on Little Hilbre at high tide.
4 Whimbrel - Point of Ayr.

April 25

1 Grasshopper Warbler and 13 Whimbrel - Point of Ayr.
1 Blue-headed Wagtail, 8 Grasshopper Warbler, 2 Tree Pipit, 3 Swift, a few Red-throated Diver and  and at least 20 Little Tern - Gronant.
9 White Wagtail, 4 Wheatear, 2 Grasshopper Warbler, 23 Common Tern, 20+ Sandwich Tern, 11 Gannet, 6 Common Scoter, 2 Red-throated Diver, 4 Great-crested Grebe and 9 Whimbrel - Red Rocks.
Common Whitethroats - Shotwick Fields (track between Saughall and Deeside Industrial Park).

April 24

1 Peregrine Falcon, 1 Arctic Skua, 25 Gannet, 7 Whimbrel, 60 Commic Tern, 25 Sandwich Tern and 57 Common Scoter - Hilbre Island, also a good selection of migrants including 2 Grasshopper Warbler.

April 23

175 Ringed Plover, 400 Dunlin, 80 White Wagtail and 2 Yellow Wagtail -  Hoylake shore.
200 Sandwich Tern and 4 Little Tern - Gronant Beach.
2 Little Owl - Stapledon Wood.
1 Marsh Harrier flying over West Kirby Marine Lake.

April 22

600 Meadow Pipit, 15 Gannet, 7 Brent Goose, 50 Kittiwake, 80 Sandwich Tern and 70 Common Scoter - Hilbre Island.
45 White Wagtail, 3 Little Tern (first of the year), 2 Red-throated diver, 1700 Knot and 1 Arctic Tern -  Hoylake shore. 
4 Whimbrel, 1 Yellow-legged Gull, 1 Hobby, 2 Common Tern, 70 White Wagtail, 2 Grasshopper Warbler, 250 Sandwich Tern and 2 Little Tern - Gronant Beach.

April 21

Sedge and Reed Warblers back at Red Rocks Marsh.
3 Tree Pipit (first of spring), 12 Sand Martin, 5 Swallow, 1 Redpoll and 1 Whimbrel - Hoylake sea front with 1 Little Gull and good numbers of Terns off shore.
*First* House Martin of Spring - just outside Greenfield Valley
2 Brent Goose - Hilbre Island.

April 15

44 Gannet, 32 Sandwich Tern, 22 Arctic Tern, 20 Common Tern, 35 Commic Tern, 7 Little Gull, 6 Fulmar, 14 Kittiwake, 12 Guillemot, 9 Scoter  and 2 Razorbill - Hoylake sea watch this morning at low tide, and 15 Manx Shearwater in the evening.
A strong North-west wind meant a poor day for migrants on Hilbre Island but that same wind meant some good sea-watching - 3 Great-crested Grebe, 150 Gannet, 10 Fulmar, 15 Kittiwake, 2 Guillemot and 40 Sandwich Tern.

Large fall of Warblers, mainly Willow around West Kirby and Red Rocks area.

April 9

1 Merlin, 13 Red-breasted Merganser, estimate of 1,000 Shelduck and a probable Osprey but too far out to be sure - Heswall Shore.
1 Little Egret - Burton Marsh.
2 Little Egret, 2 Merlin, 1 Peregrine Falcon, 22 Red-breasted Merganser and female Scaup - Parkgate Marsh.

April 8

25 White Wagtail, 12 pale-bellied Brent Goose and 1 dark-bellied Brent Goose - Hoylake Shore.
At least one pair each of Green and Greater Spotted Woodpecker - Caldy Hill/Woods, but no Lesser Spotted seen.
1 Willow Warbler (singing), many Chiffchaffs, 1 Greater Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Dipper and 1 Greater Scaup (female) or possibly Scaup x Tufted Duck Hybrid - Greenfield Valley.
11 Common Scoter, 20+ Sandwich Tern, 16 Purple Sandpiper, 12 Gannet, 1 probable Black Tern, 15 Red-breasted Merganser, 19 pale-bellied Brent Goose and 1 dark-bellied Brent Goose - Hilbre Island, also 2,000 Oystercatcher on Little Hilbre.
1 Little Egret - Burton Marsh.

April 7

2 Peregrine Falcon, 20 Red-breasted Merganser and estimate of 3,000 Redshank - Heswall Shore
1 Great Skua, 18 Pale-bellied Brent Goose, 5 Common Scoter, 15+ Little Gull, 1 Long-tailed Duck, 55 Gannet, 5 Fulmar, 1 Manx Shearwater, 9 Goldeneye and 7 Red-throated Diver - Hoylake Shore.
20 Common Scoter, 10 Gannet, 2 Fulmar, 3 Great Skua, 1 Arctic Skua, 20 Little Gull, 19 pale-bellied Brent Goose and 1 dark-bellied Brent Goose - Hilbre Island.

April 6

2 Whimbrel *First of Spring* - flying over Gilroy Pool, West Kirby.

7 Sand Martin seen flying south over  West Kirby last couple of days, and who can blame them in this weather!
The first Arctic Terns and 15 Sandwich Tern - Hoylake Shore.

April 3

150 Black-tailed Godwit - Heswall Shore.
3 Sparrowhawk soaring over Grange Hill, West Kirby.
1 Stonechat - Caldy cliffs.
3,000 Oystercatcher and 1,500 Knot being harassed by a Peregrine Falcon - Caldy Shore.

18 Purple Sandpiper, 18 pale-bellied Brent Goose and 1 dark-bellied Brent Goose - Hilbre Island.

April 2

1 Pied Flycatcher (male) - West Kirby, Rectory Road. A very early sighting of this scarce visitor. 
6 Sand Martin, 3 Swallows, 2 Willow Warbler, 5 Gannet, 19 pale-bellied Brent Goose and 1 dark-bellied Brent Goose - Hilbre Island.

April 1

1 Grasshopper Warbler *First  of Year* - earliest record for Wirral/Cheshire, 1 Chiffchaff, 3 Wheatear and 15 Goldcrest - Red Rocks.
4 pair Eider, 11 Wheatear, 2 White Wagtail, 10 Golden Plover in summer plumage, 19 pale-bellied Brent Goose and 1 dark-bellied Brent Goose - Hilbre Island, 25 Crows flying across to Wales.
