For the attention of: schools, colleges, community and adult education organisations in Wirral and Merseyside.

The Friends of Hilbre sent out a letter earlier this year, describing the proposed study centre on Hilbre, for local groups to use.  We have had positive interest from several groups: adult education, schools, colleges, people learning English for the first time.  We are currently busy raising funds to convert the Victorian buildings for public use, over the next few years, as the Hilbre Island Centre.

The 3 Hilbre islands belong to Wirral Borough Council, and are run by the Parks and Open Spaces Department.  The islands are a Local Nature Reserve, and they share with the Dee Estuary a number of important designations, eg. a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Ramsar Site of international importance for wetland bird species.

The Hilbre Island Centre will be run by Wirral Borough Council as a place where groups can book accommodation, at first only for the day.  In the meantime, permitted groups could visit Hilbre, and use the facilities, such as books to identify wild life, hand-outs on several topics, and the use of a telescope.  Schools may wish to design their own work sheets and projects.  We can supply background information.

Many schools already book with Wirral Country Park to visit Hilbre for Seashore Life,  Geology, and the History of the Liverpool Docks Telegraph.  Adults come to watch birds, to take photographs, and to be inspired for creative writing and art work.  We have set up a project, now running, for schools to collect children’s writing, photographs and drawings about the developing Hilbre Island Centre and its buildings.  There is no closing date, but please let us know of your interest.

If you would like more information about future plans and/or the project on Recording the Hilbre Island Centre, please contact our e-mail:
